Twitter makes me love those I haven't met. Facebook makes me hate those I know in real life.

chickennarcissisticIf you are anything like me, you have a love/hate relationship with Facebook. I fought it as long as I could and finally joined back in 2008. As Facebook evolved, I began to use it more and more for work while managing various business pages. What annoys me about Facebook is the constant self-promotion by those that obviously need affirmation that they are attractive, smart, or funny. I also get a little irked when married people communicate with each other on their respective "walls". Can you not walk down the hall or into the kitchen and tell your partner what you need to say? Is it really necessary to piss so much on your territory that I can smell it on my computer?

I read an article recently about the amount of narcissism on Facebook. The article says "Narcissistic tendencies in many people fuels a need to have a large group of 'friends' link to their pages and many of these people accept cyber-friends that they don’t even know" . I know you have a few of what I like to call “friend whores” on your list of “friends”. They will friend everyone they meet; no one is exempt from their reach. From grocery store lines to the shower at the gym, they will “friend” you.

Which brings up something else to consider. Do you think Facebook has devalued the term “friend”? Sure, I know all of the people on my Facebook page. Some I have known nearly all my life and some are new acquaintances. Some only keep up with my through Facebook and others I see on a regular basis and have a deeper understanding of the person I am today.

Another article I read notes for the average narcissist, Facebook "offers a gateway for hundreds of shallow relationships and emotionally detached communication."; More importantly for this study, social networking in general allows the user a great deal of control over how he or she is presented to and perceived by peers and other users.

Maybe this is why I do not like Facebook. Maybe it is because I am comfortable in my own skin and want others to feel the same way. It takes a lot of time and effort to create and maintain the perception people are presenting on Facebook.  I don't think I could maintain that facade very long without losing it on some level.  I would probably have to lock myself up in my house due to fear that I might run in to someone in real life that would call me out.  Frankly I prefer real people that admit they are not perfect because I certainly am not.  The only perfect person I know of died on a cross.

All or Nothing

Although some of my friends affectionately call it obsessive, That is just the kind of gal I am.  Whatever you call it, it does tend to cause some problems.  About a year ago I started my blog to document our family happenings for family and friends to keep up with us in real time.  It also gave me an excuse to not have to actually talk to people.  Want to know what is going on,  just log on!  The hubs lost me to one social network after another.  He then lost me to dropping my entrecard on visiting other sites through entrecard.

I do not like to do things half assed, so when I started working outside of the home again after ten years of working for myself, hubs lost his wife again.  My explanation for this is that I have very high expectations of myself, or I am competitive, I am not sure.  Either way, this disposition of mine causes me to focus on one thing at a time, while other good stuff may get pushed aside.  Case in point, this site.

My latest addiction was those damn vampire books.  You know the ones I am talking about.  I refuse to actually use the author's name or any character names because I am afraid I will come up on searches by love struck teenie boppers.  Don't get me wrong, I am a little smitten with the guy too; and hubs is not all that disappointed with the role playing!  I digress.

I am done with the books.  I am back.

On Social Media~ What Does It All Mean

I started this site in January of this year after one of my oldest and dearest friends insisted that I should do so. Her exact words I believe, with some editorial help, were "You should turn your journal into a blog, you would be hilarious!". I have always told folks I was funny, I was just happy someone finally caught on.

So at the turn of 2008 I turned the tangible journal I had been keeping for the boys into an electronic version. I liked the idea of allowing my friends and family to keep up with us and for me to meet some like minded (or not so like minded) folks.

I started my journey slowly. I joined what I think is the best social network ever and have met some of the most talented and supportive group of mature, professional people out there. Prior to joining Cre8Buzz I though social networks were for teenagers and elderly pedophiles. I was mistaken.

As my journey continued I added a few tools to my arsenal to make my efforts easier. I began reading other sites and took their ques. I waded through all of the widgets and found some that I liked and thought might be beneficial. I wanted to see where readers where coming from so I added a traffic widget. I wanted to see just how funny I was so I added sitemeter. I wanted to follow some of my favorite folks so I added Twitter.

I am certainly not a professional blogger yet, but I do think I have a good handle on the tools available to bloggers. My concern is that I, or we, are duplicating our work or creating too much work for ourselves. I notice as I cruise through my accounts that many of the same people are in the networks. So in an effort to assist my neurotic ways I created a list. The list consists of all my memberships in on line communities or tools.

What I ask of you is to do the same in a post and link back to it in the comments here. That way you do not have to make the list twice and others will benefit from your info as well.
